Andreia Teixeira-Castro, Ph.D.

Andreia Teixeira-Castro holds a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Porto (2002), an M.Sc. in Molecular Genetics (2007), and a Ph.D. in Health Sciences (2011) from the University of Minho. She completed her doctoral and postdoctoral research at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) in Portugal and Northwestern University in the USA. During this time, she developed a robust drug discovery platform spanning C. elegans, mouse models, and human cells, collaborating across disciplines including biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, high-throughput screening, and clinical medicine.

Currently, Andreia is an Assistant Investigator at ICVS and an Invited Assistant Professor at the University of Minho’s School of Medicine. She is part of the Translational Neurogenetics research team, where she leads projects focused on serotonergic signaling and protein homeostasis (proteostasis). Her research centers on understanding how disruptions in proteostasis contribute to neurodegenerative diseases and exploring strategies to restore proteostasis balance as a therapeutic approach.

Andreia’s work combines pharmacology, chemical genetics, molecular biology, advanced imaging, transcriptomics, proteomics, and behavioral analysis—integrating insights from molecules to model organisms to human patients. She has authored 40 peer-reviewed publications, holds an international patent in drug repurposing for neurodegenerative diseases, and co-founded Screen4Health to advance innovative health solutions.
